Fire Breast or Chimney Removal

Structural Consultants

It has become more popular to remove old fire breasts or chimneys as they are no longer required, or to create a larger living space. The latter is the more common. A fire breast is a major structural element of a property. To remove a brick fire breast needs thoughtful planning and design. It is also compulsory to Notify and involve Building Control to see the procedure is done correctly. The ground floor fire breast will support the fire breast in the room above, and then in turn support the chimney or brick flue in the attic and again the chimney projecting through the roof that is finished with a chimney pot. Where fire breasts are removed, a structure of steel will be required to support the remaining breasts/brick flues above.
